No responses from so many readers, yet worthy of one.An equally fascinating journey involves the violin of Titanic Bandmaster Wallace Henry Hartley which was a gift from his fiance.Hartly placed the violin in soft leather suitcase and strapped it on top of his life jacket. His body was recovered 10 days after the sinking along with the instrument. The story goes that it was returned to his fiance by the Canadian government where it remained for 30 plus years. Upon his fiance’s death, her sister found it,still in the leather suitcase. She gave it to the head of the local Salvation Army who in turn gave it to a local musician. Eventually it was rediscovered in an attic by a family member in 2006. It took years to authenticate but eventually sold at auction for 1.7 million to an unnamed collector.Nearer my God to thee…..I think he looks after such artifacts.
